Pichugin’s lawyer Ksenia Kostromina: «Everything published in the article does not reflect the reality» | 12 Jul 2017

Ksenia KostrominaOn 12th of July, 2017 a lawyer of Aleksey Pichugin Ksenia Kostromina made a statement for mass media following appearance of misinformation on Politonline.ru related to the role allegedly played by the former YUKOS employee in crimes and his filling a petition for mercy addressed to Vladimir Putin.

It is also claimed in the publication that Aleksey Pichugin allegedly gave some testimony to the investigation, which enabled to initiate the so-called «third case» against the former head of the oil company fallen into disfavor Mikhail Khodorkovsky  related to arrangement of the murder of Nefteyugansk City mayor Vladimir Petukhov in 1998.

«Everything published in the article does not reflect the reality. Neither petition [for mercy] dated 28th of April, 2017 was submitted, nor investigative activities with Pichugin from July, 2016 were conducted. The fact of filling the second petition for mercy, which was filed on 4th of May, 2017, is associated with the desire to give a chance for RF to implement two decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, which recognized that judicial proceedings against Pichugin were unfair»,  Ksenia Kostromina told.

Let us remind that on 13th of July, 2016 Aleksey Pichugin was interrogated by an investigator of the Federal Security Service of Russia Mikhail Savitsky, while staying in the Moscow detention facility «Lefortovo», where he was convoyed from a colony «Black Dolphin» for convicts sentenced to lifetime imprisonment (the Federal State Institution Correctional Facility No. 6 of Sol-Iletsk, Orenburg region). The investigator did not mention, with regard to which case he interrogated Pichugin, and Pichugin himself refused to give testimony, having made use of the 51st article of the Constitution permitting not to incriminate oneself and ones family.

The European Court of Human Rights in its two judgments (dated 23rd of October, 2012 and 6th of June, 2017) emphasized that Aleksey Pichugin had been imprisoned without any legal causes. He was convicted twice in violation of the right to fair trial envisaged in the sixth article of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. The Civil Rights Society «Memorial» (Moscow) recognized Aleksey Pichugin to be a political prisoner.
