Garry Kasparov: Russia deliberately ignores these court orders
Yesterday [28.06.2017] in Strasbourg, within the walls of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, I made a speech at the event dedicated to Aleksey Pichugin — a political prisoner, who has been already serving life in prison for 14 years in one of the most severe Russian prisons.
Today Pichugin is actually a hostage of Putin’s regime and illegal sentence imposed on him became a demonstrative punishment for refusal to give false testimony against Mikhail Khodorkovsky.
Twice the European Court of Human Rights gave rulings highlighting the grossest violations in the course of judicial proceedings under the case of Pichugin. However, Russia deliberately ignores these court orders despite the obligations undertaken upon accession to the Council of Europe.
It seems clear that further presence of Putins Russia that cynically ignores fundamental principles of the international law in the Council of Europe reflects poorly on the European institutions. It is time for the European leaders to stop closing eyes to shameless ignoring by the Russian government of the orders of the European Court of Human Rights and to take necessary coercive measures up to excluding the Russian Federation from the Council of Europe.
