Political Prisoner Alexey Pichugin returned to the Black Dolphin Prison Camp | 3 Apr 2017

Vera VasilievaThe news had surfaced this Monday, April 3, via the defense of ex-YUKOS official. As Xenia Kostromina, one of Pichugin’s lawyers, said, the defender intended to visit his client in Sol-Iletsk on Tuesday.

Previously, the information about Pichugin’s disappear from the Lefortovo Detention Center where he had been held since July 2016, appeared last Monday, on March 27. Since then, neither his relatives, nor his defenders had received any official information regarding the whereabouts of the convict. Alexey Pichugin had already served 8 years in the Black Dolphin prison camp (formally called Federal Correctional Facility Prison Camp 6 in Sol-Iletsk, Orenburg Region), that is, from 2008 to 2016.

The ex-YUKOS official had repeatedly claimed his innocence, affirming at the same time that the investigation team had made several attempts to force him to testify against the oil company management. Independent observers supposed that it was because of the attempt to extort a false testimony from him in order to open the so-called third case against Khodorkovsky, this time concerning the murder of Vladimir Petukhov, then Mayor of Nefteyugansk, that Pichugin had been ferried to Moscow.

In October of 2012 the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) had ruled out that the convict had been deprived of his right to fair trial, and therefore it is indispensable to repeal the sentence and conduct a trial de novo in order to restore it. The Center for Human Rights Memorial (Moscow) had officially declared Pichugin political prisoner.
