A picket was held in Munich in support of Alexei Pichugin, convicted in Russia | 16 Jun 2016

Radio LibertyIn Munich, on June 15th, 2016, a picket was held in support of Aleksey Pichugin, convicted former employee of ’Yukos’, who is serving a life sentence in a Russian prison. The picket was organized by civic activist Madina Magomedova, who supports Russian political prisoners and, in particular, Alexey Pichugin and Ildar Dadin.

The posters, with photos of Pichugin, written in several languages, call for the release of the former head of the department of internal economic security, for the company ’Yukos’. Alexei Pichugin was arrested on June 19th, 2003, and he was accused of involvement in several murders and attempted murders and so sentenced to life imprisonment. In October 2012 the Strasbourg court declared the verdict, from its first criminal proceedings, unfair, and pointed to the need for its abolition, but Russia has ignored the judgment. Pichugin has been in prison for 13 years.

A few days ago the lawyer Kseniya Kostromina reported that Alexei Pichugin sent Russian President Vladimir Putin, a petition for clemency, but it was denied. The attorney said that her client is unjustly convicted of crimes that he did not commit. Former co-owner of ’Yukos’, Mikhail Khodorkovsky , other former Pichugins colleagues, as well as human rights activists, all believe that the case against him was fabricated for political reasons. Russian Center of Human Rights «Memorial» stated that Pichugin is a political prisoner.

Living in Germany, activist Madina Magomedova says that Alexey Pichugin is a courageous and honest man. She calls on all Russian compatriots living abroad, to show solidarity with the former ’Yukos’ employee, who was the first arrested and convicted in the case of Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s oil company, and continues to remain in jail, accused of crimes, not proven by the Russian court.
