    Code:

    Shapiro Vladimir Vasilievich | 22 Jan 2007

Former police officer. He was a target in the second Alexey Pichugins trial as one of the accused. At the very beginning of the hearings of the case, on May, 16, 2006, Vladimir Shapiro demanded to make them closed. This demand was motivated by that he feared his personal security and the members of his familys life.

Alexey Pichugin, his defence and some other defendants spoke against such measure, which, according to them, would have violated the defendants rights. Alexey Pichugins lawyers Kseniya Kostromina and George Kaganer appealed in the circumstances concerned to come to nothing more than to close those court sessions where Shapiro himself would give evidence. The presiding judge Vladimir Usov acknowledged their arguments fair, and, thus, satisfied Shapiros appeal only partially.

Vladimir Shapiro was accused of the assassination of the head of the Moscow trade company Valentina Korneeva. There witnessed against him Korneevas husband Dmitry Korneev. According to the evidence of this witness, in January, 1998 his wife was shot on the staircase of their house by Vladimir Shapiro.

The defendant fully admitted his guilt and stated that he repented of his deeds.

Vladimir Shapiro on the 17-th of August was admitted guilty by the court and sentenced to 19 years of imprisonment. The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation on the 21-st of February 2007 remained this sentence in force.

At the court session on the 24-th of May 2007, within the limits of the third Alexey Pichugins trial under the chairmanship of Peter Shtunder, all the evidence which had ever been given by Vladimir Shapiro (including at the closed session of the Moscow City Court in summer 2006) was read out on application of the defence. In this trial Shapiro participated as a witness for the prosecution.

As follows from the strengths of the read out materials, Shapiro repeatedly and considerably changed his evidence. In different time, since 2004 to 2007, Shapiro in different ways answered the questions about the role in committed crimes of all the figurants of the case, including himself, Tsygelnik, Reshetnikov, Goritovsky, Gorin, and also Alexey Pichugin and Leonid Nevzlin. At the interrogation, conducted within the limits of the closed court session of the Moscow City Court in summer 2006, Shapiro stated that he hadnt known and had never seen Alexey Pichugin and Leonid Nevzlin, that the direct customer of Valentina Korneevas assassination was Sergey Gorin, and the names of other customers were unknown for him. And that this was the evidence which should be considered corresponding to the truth. In the appeal addressed to the panel of judges of the Supreme Court, Vladimir Shapiro affirmed about the same. And also about that the investigators promised him manna from heaven for false evidence against Pichugin and Nevzlin.

However, during the interrogation at the third trial on May, 24, 2007 Vladimir Shapiro returned to the version of the General Prosecutors Office that the assassinations had been ordered to him by Alexey Pichugin and Leonid Nevzlin.
