On the 24th of March the Jury found YuKOS employee Aleksey Pichugin guilty in all charges.
The verdict of the jury has emphasized that A.Pichugin is not subject to mitigation of punishment.
It is noteworthy that the defense lawyers were not given an opportunity to correct the questionnaire that was offered to the jury by Natalia Olikhver, the judge. The judge prepared 18 questions for the jury. Many of them included violations of the Criminal Procedure Code as they dealt with a few charges each. The use of such wordings discouraged the jury. Everything was done to prevent them from passing a verdict of “not guilty“.
Besides that the defense lawyers insisted on removing more precise definitions from the questions, which pointed out that Mr. Pichugin was a YuKOS employee. In the Defense’s opinion it could also influence the jury’s opinion.
The Defense had really prepared their variants of all the questions. In particular the defense lawyers offered to add the questions to the number of 21 and divide some of them into paragraphs. But none of the amendments suggested by the Defense was approved. Olikhver, the judge declined all the Defense’s appeals after 8 minutes of discussion.

The jury did not pass their verdict till in the evening. Two-thirds majority found Mr. Pichugin guilty in all the charges and not subject to mitigation of punishment. In spite of it they considered that Mr. Pichugin was planning the massacre of former Chief of Administrative Division of close corporation „Rosprom“ Sergey Kolesov rather than his murder.
On the 30th of March Natalia Olikhver, the judge of the Moscow City Court sentenced YuKOS employee Aleksey Pichugin to 20 years of deprivation of liberty in a colony with strict regime.
